Many people assumed the AI era would begin only when machines looked unmistakably human: reasoning across domains, understanding the world deeply, and outperforming skilled workers in obvious ways. But that was never the threshold most businesses were waiting for.

The real turning point was much less dramatic. The AI era arrived when routine digital work became cheap enough, fast enough, and usable enough to slot directly into existing workflows. Once "good enough" automation became cheaper than paying humans to do the same first-pass work, the transition stopped being philosophical and became operational...

That is why the current shift feels larger than the actual brilliance of the systems involved.

Most companies do not need a machine that thinks like a person to change hiring behavior. They need software that can handle enough useful work to alter the staffing math. The crucial question was never only whether AI could become extraordinary. It was whether AI could become commercially useful before it became extraordinary.

That answer now looks increasingly clear.

The AI era arrived the moment routine office work stopped starting from zero. It arrived when a draft email could be generated before a human touched it. It arrived when a junior analyst no longer had to build the first summary by hand. It arrived when support replies, product copy, research notes, internal docs, and basic code scaffolds could be produced in seconds instead of hours.

None of that required AGI. It required a lower cost per useful action.

That distinction matters because employers do not compare AI only with the best worker in the building. They compare it with the full cost of hiring, training, coordinating, and retaining people to perform repeatable work. Once software becomes good enough to absorb a meaningful share of that work, the economic logic changes even if the software remains narrow and imperfect.

This is why the current disruption is hitting ordinary business processes before grand theory catches up.

In manufacturing, deeper automation often required new machinery, new facilities, and long deployment cycles. In digital work, much of the surrounding environment already existed: laptops, SaaS systems, cloud infrastructure, APIs, networked workflows, and employees working inside software all day. AI did not need to invent a new operating environment. It entered one that was already built.

That is also why the disruption is so uneven.

The most exposed work is usually repeatable digital execution: summaries, drafts, internal analysis, routine coding, templated communication, documentation, and other tasks where acceptable output matters more than the perfect version. Jobs tied to judgment, trust, liability, client handling, or domain-specific accountability remain harder to compress. But the middle layer of ordinary office work is already being repriced.

This is where the original point becomes more uncomfortable.

Once cheap automation is good enough, employers do not need machine genius to start cutting the lower layer of paid work. They only need the machine to be cheap enough to make a human look expensive. That is why the first impact lands on routine digital jobs, junior office work, and other roles built around repeatable output rather than on the most elite work in a field.

That is the real reason the AI era feels like it has already begun. The economic threshold was crossed before the philosophical threshold. Companies do not need to wait for a digital genius if a cheaper digital worker is already good enough to change budgets and headcount.

This also explains why so much public debate still sounds one step behind the actual change. Many people are still asking whether AI can become truly intelligent. Many employers are already asking a much simpler question: does this reduce labor cost right now?

That difference in benchmark changes everything. Once the comparison is salary versus software cost, not human genius versus machine genius, the disruption can begin much earlier than most people expected. AI does not need to be extraordinary. It only needs to be cheap enough that ordinary human work starts to look overpriced.

For workers, the practical lesson is blunt. Waiting for proof of machine genius is the wrong benchmark. The near-term disruption comes from narrow systems that are useful enough to change budgets, workflows, and team size before they ever become truly intelligent. The machine does not need to be amazing. It needs to be cheap enough to make your ordinary work look expensive.

That is why this moment already feels like a real break. AI did not need to arrive as a mind to start changing work. It only needed to arrive as something cheap, embedded, and useful enough that employers could stop paying people to do the same first-pass tasks by hand.
